This extraordinary property, located on the edge of Union Square in San Francisco, had fallen into disrepair and laid vacant for several years. Antunovich Associates and McCaffery saved and redeveloped this historic structure by reimagining the project for high-end, pedestrian-friendly retail. This task required completely gutting the entire interior, adding seismic reinforcing, and painstakingly repairing and revitalizing the exterior facades. A new street-level storefront that responded to each of the retail tenants was added. This entirely refurbished gem anchors the northeast corner of Union Square and became home to The Disney Store, Borders Books and Music, and Morton’s Steakhouse. Restoring this historic structure to its prominence on Union Square took only 18 months.
