The Baton Rouge Area Foundation worked with state and federal leaders to found the Water Institute of the Gulf as a not-for-profit, independent research institute created to serve as a collaboration hub among the world's best scientists and engineers. The Water Institute is driving innovation in coastal restoration and hurricane protection, and the campus only strengthens the efforts to address the coastal issues facing Louisiana. The work here also supports a growing coastal protection industry and provides a database for conditions worldwide.
The Institute is composed of land purchased and donated by the East Baton Rouge Housing Authority, the State of Louisiana and the City of Baton Rouge. The initial phase included the dedication of approximately 30 acres and a $45 million construction investment for three facilities. Surrounding areas will be privately developed but will be consistent with the Water Campus Master Plan. The Louisiana Economic Development is in strong support as it views water management as one of the essential factors for state growth and development.
